Isakson Statement on Obama Administration's Decision to Try 9/11 Suspects in Military Commissions at Guantanamo Bay

WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Johnny Isakson, R-Ga., today made the following statement in response to the Obama Administration's announcement that it will try the masterminds of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, including Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, in military commissions at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba:

"The Administration's initial attempt to try Khalid Sheikh Mohammed in New York City where he was the mastermind of the slaughter of almost 3,000 Americans was just plain wrong. In addition, it is wrong to grant American constitutional rights to a terrorist from another country. Although today's announcement by the Administration was long overdue, I am very pleased that the President has changed course and that the 9/11 suspects will be tried away from our home soil, ensuring the safety and security of the American people."
