Isakson Praises Passage of Resolution Designating National Cerebral Palsy Awareness Day

WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Johnny Isakson, R-Ga., today praised the passage of a resolution to designate March 25, 2011, as "National Cerebral Palsy Awareness Day." The legislation, S.Res.75, was introduced by Isakson and cosponsored by Senator Robert Casey, D-Pa.

"I am very pleased to support this resolution that raises awareness for a disease that affects many families," said Isakson. "I hope that Americans across the country will take time to educate themselves and others on cerebral palsy and show their support for the brave individuals who suffer from this disease."

"Cerebral palsy" refers to any number of neurological disorders that appear in infancy or early childhood and permanently affect body movement and the muscle coordination necessary to maintain balance and posture. Approximately 800,000 people in the United States are affected by cerebral palsy. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has released information indicating that cerebral palsy is becoming more prevalent and that about 1 in 278 children suffer from cerebral palsy.
