Chambliss, Isakson Announce Agriculture Funds for Peanut Production

WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Saxby Chambliss, R-Ga., Chairman of the Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition, and Forestry, and Senator Johnny Isakson, R-Ga., today final Congressional approval of the fiscal year 2006 funding bill for the U.S. Department of Agriculture including $133,130 in funding for peanut production and research in Dawson, Georgia.                                                                                                              

“Peanuts an integral part of Georgia’s agriculture industry,” said Chambliss.  “As Chairman of the Senate Agriculture Committee, I will continue working to secure funding for these important programs.”

“The peanut industry in Georgia produces 45 percent of our nation’s supply and is a vital part of our state’s economy,” Isakson said. “I am pleased the Senate saw fit to support these worthy programs."

$133,130 will go to develop sustainable management strategies for irrigated and non-irrigated peanut systems in all peanut producing regions of the US.

$150,000 will go to continued research of the factors affecting the production, harvesting, storage and quality of peanuts.
