Isakson, Chambliss Announce Funding for the Georgia Project

WASHINGTON - U.S. Senators Johnny Isakson (R-GA) and Saxby Chambliss (R-GA) today announced that the Georgia Project in Dalton and Whitfield County will receive a $297,600 grant from the Department of Education to help fulfill their priorities for the 2005-2006 school year.

The Georgia Project is a non-profit consortium of education, business and community leaders in Dalton and Whitfield Counties and faculty from the Universidad de Monterrey.  Its mission is to enhance the academic achievement of Hispanic children in Georgia. 

The Georgia Project has nine priorities for the 2005-2006 school year:

  • To encourage and support interaction and joint planning across districts in Georgia for improving the education of Hispanic Students.
  • To continue and expand professional development opportunities for teachers and administrators in school systems.
  • To increase community outreach.
  • To begin planning a second regional education conference.
  • To augment adult literacy programs.
  • To provide scholarships for bilingual high school graduates who will pursue degrees in education.
  • To provide expanded support for exchange teachers from Monterrey.
  • To continue research and planning for a dual language charter school.
  • To strengthen the Project’s management structure and plan for the future.

“I am pleased to announce this grant for the Georgia Project,” said Isakson. “This funding will enable the Georgia Project to continue successful programs and activities that have been funded in the past, expand its reach across Georgia and move ahead with new initiatives in the areas of dual language education, ESOL curriculum for local schools, and support for teacher training.”

“I am honored to assist the Georgia Project in their efforts to connect students, faculty, and the Dalton community with access to these important resources,” said Chambliss.  “I will continue working to ensure that Georgia communities have access to important resource materials to promote learning at every level.”

This Department of Education grant is part of the Fund for the Improvement of Education Earmark Grant Awards Program.  The purpose of this program is to provide grants to eligible entities to assist them in designing and implementing character education programs.
