Isakson, Chambliss Announce $4.5 Million in HUD Funding for Augusta

WASHINGTON – U.S. Senators Johnny Isakson (R-GA) and Saxby Chambliss (R-GA) today announced that Augusta will receive $4,528,632 in grants from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development to provide housing and economic opportunities for low-income families.

The grants are being distributed in the following categories: the American Dream Downpayment Initiative (ADDI), Community Development Block Grant (CDBG), Emergency Shelter Grant (ESG), HOME and Housing Opportunities for Persons with AIDS (HOPWA) programs.

“I am pleased to announce these grants for Augusta,” said Isakson. “The programs they fund are vital to aiding local communities by helping those who need it most.”

“These important programs fund a wide range of community initiatives, such as housing and rehabilitation, support services, public improvements and economic development projects in Augusta, Georgia and across the nation,” said Chambliss.  “I will continue to work with my colleagues in support of the programs that mean so much to so many Georgia communities.”

Under the HOME program, the ADDI program will receive a grant of $46,401, which will promote homeownership opportunities by providing necessary resources for downpayment and closing cost assistance to low-income and minority households.

The CDBG program will receive a grant of $2,604,616 to develop viable urban communities by providing decent housing and a suitable living environment, and by expanding economic opportunities, principally for low- and moderate-income persons.

The ESG program will receive a grant of $100,760 to improve the quality and number of emergency homeless shelters.

The HOME program will receive a grant of $1,358,855 to expand the supply of decent, affordable housing to low- and very-low-income families.

The HOPWA program will receive a grant of $418,000 to provide housing assistance and related supportive services that benefit low-income persons medically diagnosed with HIV/AIDS and their families.
