Chambliss, Isakson Announce $2.3 Million in Research Grants for Emory University

WASHINGTON – U.S. Senators Saxby Chambliss, R-Ga., and Johnny Isakson, R-Ga., today announced that Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia has been awarded a total of $2,311,078 by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute and National Institute of General Medicine.

“I am pleased to see these funds going towards valuable medical research that will ultimately improve the health and well-being of Georgians and Americans,” Chambliss said.  “I am proud of Emory University, and I appreciate their commitment to continue their research into heart and vascular disease.”

“Emory University is one of the finest medical research facilities in the country, and I know that these funds will lead to great advancements in the area of heart and vascular disease research,” said Isakson. 

Emory University will receive the following funds:

  • $1,537,943 to be used for nanotechnology research on the detection and analysis of plaque.
  • $309,056 to be used for research into stem cell therapy and arrhythmia.
  • $272,829 to be used for research regarding directed evolution to diversify HIV protease function.
  • $191,250 to be used towards cooperative clinical research through the Emory Clinical Research Center in IPF.
